A socket and a switch plate feel warm and look slightly discoloured — should I worry?

One of our wall sockets feels warm to the touch and a light switch plate has gone slightly brown/discoloured, even though everything still works (this isn't a dead socket — it works, it's just warm/marked).

Short answer: a socket or switch that runs WARM or has gone BROWN/DISCOLOURED is a genuine warning sign and should NOT be ignored — it usually means a loose or high-resistance connection, or a circuit/socket being overloaded, and both generate heat behind the faceplate. Heat there can scorch the terminals, melt insulation and, at worst, start a fire. The safe move is to stop using that socket/switch (switch off the circuit at the board if you can), and get a licensed electrician to open it up, find the loose/overloaded connection and put it right. Do NOT open a live accessory yourself — this is a fault to diagnose, not to DIY.

What warmth/discolouration means: - Loose / high-resistance connection: a terminal that isn't tight (or has degraded) has resistance, and resistance under load makes heat — which warms the plate and, over time, browns/scorches it. This is the most common cause and a real fire risk. - Overload: drawing too much through one socket (piggy-backed adaptors, a big heater on an old circuit) heats the contacts. The browning is the heat's fingerprint. - A worn/damaged accessory or a poor-quality one that's failing.

Why it matters: - Heat behind a faceplate is how electrical fires start. A socket that's merely warm today can arc and scorch tomorrow. Discolouration means it's already been hot — that's not cosmetic, it's evidence.

What to do (safely): - Stop using that socket/switch; if you can identify and switch off its circuit at the board, do so. - Don't unscrew a live accessory to "have a look" — get a licensed electrician to repair the connection or replace the accessory. They'll find whether it's a loose terminal, an overloaded circuit or a failed part, and fix the actual cause. - If you ever see scorch marks, smell burning, or hear buzzing/crackling at it — treat it as urgent.

We had a switch plate go brown and assumed it was just old/dirty — turned out the terminal behind it was loose and had been quietly overheating. The electrician said another few months and it could have scorched properly. The "discolouration means it's already been hot" line is exactly right; it's not a stain, it's a warning. Don't ignore a warm socket, and definitely don't unscrew it live to investigate. Cheap to fix a loose terminal, very much not cheap if it starts a fire.

Across a few properties this is one I never let tenants "live with" — a warm socket or a browning switch gets an electrician out, because it's almost always a loose connection or an overloaded point and both are fire risks. The overload version is often self-inflicted (a stack of adaptors and a big appliance on one old socket), so it's worth checking what's plugged in too. But the fix is the same: stop using it, get it opened up properly, sort the cause. Heat behind a faceplate is never "nothing."
