How do I fix a toilet that keeps running after flushing?
My toilet keeps running and refilling for ages after I flush — sometimes it won't fully stop until I jiggle the handle. It's wasting water and the noise is annoying. Is this something I can fix myself?

Yes — this is one of the most DIY-able plumbing fixes. Lift the cistern lid and look at two parts:
- The flapper (the rubber seal at the bottom that lifts when you flush). If it's warped or worn, water leaks past it continuously and the tank keeps refilling. A quick test: put a few drops of food colouring in the tank, wait 15 minutes without flushing — if colour appears in the bowl, the flapper is leaking. Replace it (cheap, universal part).
- The fill valve / float. If water is trickling into the overflow tube, the level is set too high — lower the float so the water stops below the top of the overflow.
The jiggling-the-handle clue points to a sticking flapper or a chain that's too tight/loose. Start with the flapper; it fixes the majority of running toilets. If you've swapped the flapper and reset the float and it still runs, the culprit is usually a worn flush-valve seat or a hairline crack in the overflow — at that point it's worth calling a plumber in Dubai rather than keep buying parts, because a leaking seat needs the whole valve reseated or replaced.
The dye test is a great tip. Mine was a hardened flapper — swapped it for a few dirhams and the constant refilling stopped immediately.
Worth flagging the flip side of this: a toilet that keeps running (this thread — usually the flapper or fill valve) is a different fault from one that flushes weakly and won't clear the bowl.
