My toilet flushes weakly and doesn't clear the bowl — what causes a poor flush?
Our toilet flushes weakly — the water swirls but doesn't fully clear the bowl, so it often needs a second flush.

Short answer: a weak flush that won't clear the bowl is usually one of four things, cheap to dear: (1) LOW WATER LEVEL in the cistern (the fill valve/float set too low, so there isn't enough water to flush with) — the easiest fix; (2) BLOCKED RIM JETS — the little holes under the rim that direct the water get clogged with limescale (very common in Dubai's hard water), so the swirl weakens; (3) a PARTIAL BLOCKAGE in the trap or the waste that's throttling the flush; or (4) a worn FLUSH VALVE/siphon not releasing the water fast enough. Start with the water level and the rim jets (both DIY-ish), then a partial blockage, then the valve.
The usual causes, in order to check: - Low water level in the cistern: if the water sits too low, there's not enough volume to flush properly. The fill valve/float may be set low or failing — raise it to the marked level. Quick, cheap, common. - Blocked/limescaled rim jets: the holes under the bowl rim that aim the water get clogged with limescale in hard water, so the flush loses its swirl and power. Descaling them (there are ways to clear the jets) often transforms a weak flush. Very common here. - Partial blockage: a partial obstruction in the trap or waste pipe throttles the flush (and it may drain slowly too). Needs clearing. - Flush valve / siphon worn: the mechanism that dumps the cistern water may not be releasing it fast/fully — a worn flush valve or flapper. Replace the part. - (Dual-flush buttons often get stuck/misadjusted too — worth a look.)
The hard-water angle: - In Dubai, limescale on the rim jets is a leading cause of a gradually weakening flush — the water can't get out cleanly. Descaling the jets (and the general scale problem — see water softener) helps.
Fixing it: - DIY-ish: check/raise the cistern water level; clear the rim jets. - Plumber: a persistent partial blockage, a worn flush valve, or if it won't improve — a licensed plumber will pinpoint it (level vs jets vs blockage vs valve) quickly.
Common mistake: assuming a weak flush means a big blockage and reaching for chemicals, when it's often just a low water level or scaled-up rim jets. Check those first. Anyone's "weak flush" turn out to be limescaled rim jets?
Rim jets were exactly our problem — the flush had slowly got feebler over a year and it turned out the little holes under the rim were half-blocked with limescale, so the water dribbled instead of swirling. Clearing them brought the flush right back. In this water it's the obvious suspect for a gradual decline. We'd assumed blockage and nearly called someone for a drain, when it was scale on the bowl itself. Check the water level and the rim jets before anything drastic; both are cheap and it's usually one of them.
Ours was low water level — the fill valve had drifted and the cistern wasn't filling to the line, so there simply wasn't enough water to flush properly. Adjusted the float and it was sorted in five minutes for free. So agree: start with the cheap, easy checks (level, then rim jets) before assuming a blockage or a new valve. The needing-a-second-flush thing is annoying and wasteful, but it's rarely the disaster it feels like. Hard water and rim jets is the very Dubai version of this; keep them clear.
