My villa pool water is going cloudy and the pump seems weak — what should I check on the pool plant?
Our villa pool has gone cloudy (slightly green-tinged), the water clearly isn't circulating like it used to — the return jets are weak — and the pump sounds like it's straining. I keep on top of the chemicals, but I've honestly never touched the pump and filter side of things and don't know how it works.
Before I call someone, I'd like to understand:
- What are the likely causes of weak circulation + cloudy water — the pump basket, the filter, the pump itself?
- What can I safely check/clean myself, and what genuinely needs a pool technician?
- Is cloudy water a circulation/filter problem or purely a chemical one?
In the UAE heat a pool goes bad fast, so I want to sort it before it turns fully green. What's the sensible order to check the pool plant?

Short answer: cloudy water + weak jets + a straining pump is almost always a circulation/filtration problem, not just chemistry — and the usual chain is a clogged pump basket or skimmer, then a dirty filter, then the pump working too hard against the blockage. Check the baskets and the filter first; a straining pump is often just starved of flow, not failing.
How a pool plant moves water (so the checks make sense): the pump pulls water through the skimmer and pump baskets, pushes it through the filter (sand/cartridge/DE), and returns it clean through the jets. If flow drops anywhere in that chain, circulation weakens and the water can't stay clear — and in UAE heat, poor circulation lets it go cloudy/green fast even with decent chemicals.
Check yourself, in order (turn the pump OFF first): 1. Skimmer + pump baskets — empty them; leaves, grit and hair clog them and starve the pump (this is the most common cause of a straining pump + weak jets). 2. Filter — a dirty filter chokes flow; backwash a sand filter, or clean/replace a cartridge. Check the pressure gauge if it has one (high = dirty filter). 3. Water level — too low and the pump sucks air and strains.
Then chemistry: once flow is restored, balance and shock it to clear the cloudiness.
Needs a pro if: baskets and filter are clean, water level's fine, and the pump still strains, whines or won't prime — that points to a failing pump (bearings/impeller), an air leak on the suction side, or a filter that needs servicing. A villa-maintenance company that services pool plant can sort the pump/filter side; some of the same booster-pump logic applies — a strained pump is usually fighting a blockage. Same water-management reality the Al Barari owners flagged. How often are people backwashing/cleaning filters in summer?
Pool owner — 90% of my "weak pump / cloudy" panics turned out to be a basket packed with leaves and grit or a filter overdue a backwash. Clearing those fixed it almost every time; the pump wasn't dying, it was just choked. In summer I check the baskets weekly and backwash more often because everything happens faster in the heat. Only once was it an actual pump issue. So do the free checks first — you'll probably save a call-out.
Learned the hard way that cloudy pool water in this climate spirals fast — a couple of days of weak circulation and it was heading green. So don't sit on it. Once I got the flow back (basket + filter) and shocked it, it cleared, but the lesson was that circulation and chemistry work together — you can't chemical your way out of a pool that isn't actually filtering. Sort the plant first, then the chemistry.
