No hot water from the electric heater — where do I start?
Woke up to no hot water at all. The electric heater (geyser) doesn't seem to be doing anything. Before I call someone out, what should I check myself?

Work through this before booking anyone:
- The wall isolator switch. Most UAE heaters have a dedicated switch (often outside the bathroom). It gets knocked off constantly — cleaners, kids, a guess at "which switch is this." Check it's on and give the heater 30–45 minutes.
- The breaker in your DB. If it's tripped, that's a clue — reset once, but if it trips again the element is likely faulty (see breaker trips when the water heater turns on).
- Thermostat reset. Many heaters have a small red reset button on the thermostat that pops when it overheats.
- Still nothing? It's usually a failed heating element or thermostat — a cheap, common replacement, but leave it to a technician; you're dealing with water and mains electricity together.
Start with the wall switch — it's the answer more often than people expect.
Can confirm the wall-switch thing 😅 turned out someone had switched ours off at the isolator. Free fix, felt silly, but glad it wasn't the element.
Worth flagging a related water-heater symptom for anyone here: no hot water (this thread) is usually the element or thermostat, but if yours instead makes rumbling, popping or crackling noises when it heats, that's sediment/scale baked into the tank — very common in our hard water. There's a separate thread on a water heater making rumbling/popping noises. Flushing the tank often quiets it and restores efficiency before the element burns out. Different symptom, same 'sort it before it dies' advice.
