Aluminium kitchen cabinets vs wood/MDF — which is better for Dubai humidity?
Doing a kitchen and I keep seeing aluminium kitchen cabinets pushed as the humidity-proof choice versus traditional wood/MDF carcasses.

Short answer: aluminium kitchen cabinets are genuinely the most MOISTURE-PROOF carcass option — aluminium doesn't swell, warp, rot or harbour damp the way board can, so in a humid, wet-prone kitchen (under-sink, coastal, a home where leaks/steam are a worry) it's the most durable, hygienic choice and won't disintegrate if it gets wet. The trade-offs: it's usually more EXPENSIVE, the look is more utilitarian/modern (though modern finishes have improved a lot), it can dent, and it's a specialist repair. Good WOOD/MR-MDF (moisture-resistant board with properly sealed edges) is cheaper, warmer-looking and perfectly durable IF it's quality and kept dry — but ordinary MDF/chipboard swells the moment water gets to an unsealed edge. So: aluminium for maximum moisture-proofing and longevity; quality MR-MDF/wood for looks and value where it'll be kept dry.
Aluminium cabinets: - Moisture: unbeatable — doesn't swell, warp, rot or delaminate, survives water/leaks/steam, doesn't harbour mould. The reason they're pushed in this humid, wet-kitchen climate. - Durability/hygiene: long-lasting, easy to wipe, won't disintegrate under the sink. - Trade-offs: higher cost; a more utilitarian look (though finishes/wood-effect have improved); can dent; repairs are a specialist job.
Wood / MR-MDF cabinets: - MR-MDF (moisture-resistant) with SEALED edges is the sensible board choice here and, kept dry, is durable and looks great — warmer, more design flexibility, cheaper. - But ordinary MDF/chipboard, or MR-board with unsealed edges, swells fast once water reaches it — the classic under-sink failure. Where each makes sense: - Aluminium: where moisture is the priority — wet zones, under-sink, coastal humidity, a worry about leaks, or you want maximum longevity/hygiene and accept the look/cost. - Quality wood/MR-MDF: where you want warmth, design range and value and the kitchen will be kept reasonably dry with sealed edges and good quality throughout. - Hybrid: some do aluminium in the wet/under-sink zones and board elsewhere.
Common mistake: buying cheap ordinary MDF/chipboard to save money and watching it swell within a year at the sink — or paying for aluminium everywhere when quality sealed MR-MDF would do outside the wet zones. We went aluminium in the wet zones (under-sink and the run by the dishwasher) and quality MR-MDF elsewhere, which felt like the smart compromise — moisture-proof exactly where the risk is, warmer look and lower cost for the rest. The full-aluminium kitchens look sharper than they used to but still read a bit clinical to me for a whole kitchen. The key with the board is the sealed edges; that's where cheap kitchens die at the sink. If it's a rental or a very wet/coastal spot I'd lean more aluminium; for our own kitchen the hybrid hit the balance.
The humidity-proofing is real — a previous kitchen had cheap board that swelled under the sink within a year, and it put me firmly off ordinary MDF for wet areas. Aluminium simply doesn't care about water, which in this climate is a genuine advantage for longevity. That said, good MR-MDF with properly sealed edges, kept dry, has been fine for us and looks warmer. So it's moisture-risk vs looks/cost: maximum-moisture-proof, go aluminium (or hybrid in the wet zones); want the warmer designed look and it'll stay dry, quality sealed MR-MDF. Just never the cheap unsealed board here.
