How often should split AC units be serviced in the UAE?
Every company tells me a different interval — one says every 3 months, another says once a year is fine. Obviously the 3-month one wants more visits. What's the honest answer for a normal apartment in the UAE climate?

The honest answer depends on use, not the calendar:
- Filters: clean every 3–4 weeks in summer if the AC runs daily. This is a DIY job and it's the single biggest thing for cooling and electricity bills.
- Full professional service (coil clean, drain flush, gas pressure check, electrical check): twice a year for a unit that runs most of the year — ideally one before summer (Apr/May) and one mid-season. Once a year is the bare minimum and fine only for lightly-used units.
So both companies are half-right. Quarterly full services are overkill for a single apartment split; annual-only tends to mean you discover a gas leak in August. Twice a year is the sweet spot.

Coming back to this as we head into peak summer — a question that comes up right alongside "how often to service" is "is the unit even the right size?" If a room never quite cools no matter how well it's serviced, it may be undersized; worth a look at what size AC a room actually needs. One thing that goes hand in hand with a regular service interval: how the outdoor unit is sited and protected. A condenser baking in direct sun or clogged with dust works harder and effectively needs servicing more often — but the fixes people reach for (boxing it in, throwing a cover on in summer) often choke the airflow and make it worse.
