Aluminium gates for a villa — durable in the sun, and what about automation/motors?
Replacing our villa's driveway and pedestrian gates and I'm looking at aluminium.
- Are aluminium gates strong and durable enough (and better than steel/iron for rust)?
- How do they hold up in the sun?
- What's involved in automating them — motors, safety sensors, power/backup?
Trying to get gates that last and open reliably without constant issues. What should I check?

Short answer: aluminium gates are an excellent UAE choice — they DON'T RUST (unlike steel/iron, which corrodes here and needs galvanising + repainting), they're light (easier on the automation motors and hinges) yet strong enough for driveway gates when properly built, and a good powder-coat holds colour in the brutal sun. The build points to check: a properly engineered frame (light doesn't mean flimsy), quality hinges/rollers/track, and an architectural powder-coat for UV. For AUTOMATION: match the motor to the gate type (swing vs sliding) and weight, and insist on the SAFETY features — obstruction sensors/photocells and a safe-edge so it stops on hitting something, a manual-release for power cuts, and ideally battery backup. Cheap gates or cheap motors are exactly where the "constant issues" come from.
Aluminium gates — the case: - No rust: the headline advantage over steel/iron in humid/coastal UAE — no corrosion, no annual rust treatment. - Light + strong: lighter than steel, which is kinder to the motor, hinges and rollers (longer-lasting automation), while a properly-engineered aluminium gate is plenty strong. - Sun: a quality architectural powder-coat resists UV/fading; occasional wash, minimal upkeep. Aluminium ended the rust headaches for us — the old steel gates were forever needing rust treatment and repainting; the aluminium ones just get washed. The automation is where I'd spend carefully: a decent motor sized to the gate, obstruction photocells (so it doesn't crush a car or a kid), and crucially a manual release for the power cuts, which WILL happen. The cheap motor on an early gate failed within a year and got stuck shut. Light aluminium is easier on the mechanism too. Good gate, good motor, the safety sensors, and a manual override — then it's reliable.
Battery backup and manual release are the two I'd never skip after being locked out during an outage with a motorised gate and no override. Sliding vs swing changes the motor and the track/rollers — sliding gates especially need a good track or they jam with dust. Aluminium being lighter genuinely helps the motor last. Powder-coat for the sun, photocells for safety, right-sized motor for the weight. It's the combination of a well-built gate and a properly-specced, safety-equipped motor that gives you the "opens reliably every time" outcome rather than a temperamental gate.
