Handyman apps vs going direct in Dubai — how do the pricing models actually differ?

For a home repair in Dubai you've basically got three routes: a handyman app/platform, going direct to a local maintenance company, or the building's FM/maintenance. I keep getting wildly different prices for similar jobs and I want to understand *why* — how the models differ, not which company is "best" (I know that's personal and I'm not after brand-bashing).

Specifically, how do they compare on:

  • Pricing structure — fixed per-job, hourly, call-out fee + parts?
  • Guarantees / warranty on the work?
  • Who actually turns up — the platform's own staff, or a subcontracted third party?
  • Transparency — do you know the price before they arrive?

We touched on apps vs local companies before, but I'm after the pricing-model mechanics this time. For people who've used more than one route — how did the pricing and experience actually differ?

Neutral, model-level answer (no brands): the three routes trade off convenience, transparency and margin differently — platforms are convenient and give upfront pricing but add a booking margin and often subcontract; direct companies usually cost less for the same job and own the guarantee; building FM is convenient for in-building issues but scope and quality vary.

How the models actually differ:

| Model | Pricing | Guarantee | Who turns up | Transparency | |---|---|---|---|---| | App / platform | Fixed per-job or packaged; a booking margin sits on top | Platform-backed (read the terms) | Often a subcontracted third party | Upfront price before arrival (the main draw) | | Direct maintenance company | Call-out fee + labour + parts, or a quoted job | The company's own guarantee | Their own technician | Depends — ask for a quote in writing | | Building FM | Sometimes in the service charge; extras billed | Building-managed | In-house or contracted | Varies; convenient for common-area/plumbing |

Why prices swing: the platform's convenience and marketing sit in the price; a direct company skips the middle margin, so for a known job it's often cheaper — the trade-off is you do the finding and vetting yourself. FM is easiest for anything building-side.

Practical rule: for a small, urgent, one-off job, a platform's upfront price and speed are worth the margin. For bigger or recurring work, going direct to a local maintenance company usually costs less and gives you one accountable party for the guarantee. Always get the price before they arrive, whichever route. What have people found the real price gap to be for the same job?

Used all three over the years. My honest experience of the *models*: the app was great for a quick, small fix with a known price — no haggling, someone came fast. But for anything bigger or repeat, going direct to a company I trust worked out cheaper and I had one number to call if it wasn't right, instead of a platform passing me between a subcontractor and support. FM was fine for the plumbing that was really the building's job. Horses for courses — match the route to the job size.

The "who actually turns up" point is the one that surprised me — with a platform I assumed it was their staff, but it was a subcontractor, which was fine but meant the guarantee conversation was murkier when a fix didn't hold. Going direct, it was the company's own guy and they stood behind it. Not saying platforms are bad — the upfront pricing is genuinely convenient — just know the model you're buying. Getting the price and the guarantee terms in writing first solved it either way.
