Our combi oven keeps tripping the board mid-service — is it the element or the wiring?
Our commercial combi oven has started tripping the kitchen's breaker, sometimes mid-service — a nightmare when we're slammed. Resetting works for a while, then it goes again.

Trying to work out who to call — an appliance technician or an electrician. This is more than the usual planned-maintenance stuff — it's tripping. What's the likely cause?

Short answer: a commercial oven that trips the breaker — especially the earth-leakage (RCD) type — most often has a heating ELEMENT that's failed and is leaking current to earth, very common once moisture/steam gets into a combi oven's element over time. That's an appliance fault (element replacement). But it CAN also be the kitchen's electrics (an overloaded circuit, a shared circuit with other equipment, or a wiring fault). You tell them apart by isolating: does it trip on THIS oven alone, or when other kit runs too? And no — you should not keep resetting and running it, because an element leaking to earth is a shock/safety risk, not just a nuisance.
Most likely (the element): - Combi ovens run heating elements in a hot, steamy environment, and over time moisture gets into an element and it starts leaking current to earth. That leakage trips the RCD — often when it heats up (so it runs a while, then trips), which matches your "resets then goes again mid-service." - This is an appliance repair — the failed element is found (insulation-resistance test) and replaced.
But could be the electrics: - Overload: if the oven shares a circuit with other heavy kit, everything running at once overloads the MCB and trips it. That's a circuit/loading problem, not the oven. - Wiring/connection fault at the isolator, plug or supply.
How to tell (isolate it): - Does it trip with only the oven on its circuit and nothing else? → points to the oven/element. - Does it trip only when other equipment also runs? → points to overload/shared circuit. - RCD (earth-leakage) trips → usually an element/insulation fault. MCB (overload) trips → usually loading/wiring.
Why stop resetting: - An element leaking to earth is a genuine safety issue in a wet, stainless, hands-on kitchen — repeatedly resetting a tripping earth-leakage device is overriding a safety trip. Take it out of service until it's diagnosed.
Common mistake: hammering the reset to get through service and treating it as "the oven being temperamental." Get a commercial kitchen equipment technician to test the element and insulation; if it turns out the oven's fine and it's the circuit, they'll point you to an electrician for the supply side. Any other operators had a combi start tripping once the elements aged?
We had exactly this — combi tripping the RCD once it got hot, always at the worst moment. It was a failed element leaking to earth; replaced it and the trips stopped dead. The "runs then trips when it's up to temperature" pattern was the giveaway. And yes, we'd been resetting it to survive service, which the tech told off — it's an earth trip, it's doing its job. Isolating it (does it trip on its own, or only with everything else running) is exactly how they pinned it to the oven and not our wiring.
Electrician's half of this: if isolating shows it trips on the oven alone with an earth-leakage trip, it's the appliance (element/insulation) and an equipment tech's job. My side comes in if it's tripping on overload because too much kit is on one circuit, or there's a supply/isolator fault — then it's about the kitchen's circuit design and loading, not the oven. Either way, "keep resetting an RCD trip" isn't a plan in a wet commercial kitchen. Diagnose which device is tripping (earth-leakage vs overload) and you know which trade to call. That distinction saves everyone guessing.
