One of my rented flats has a Haier split that's stopped cooling, and there's an error code on the indoor display — looks like an E or F and a number. The tenant sent a photo.

Haier makes it a bit easier than the blink-count brands — it usually shows an actual E- or F-code on the indoor display (some models flash it on the indoor LEDs instead). Here's how to use it.
The rough pattern: E-codes tend to point at the indoor unit (its sensors, the drain, the indoor fan/motor), and F-codes tend to point at the outdoor unit or the system as a whole (outdoor sensors, the compressor/pressure side, communication). It's a handy first sort — but only a rough one.
The important caveat: the exact code→meaning is model-specific (Haier runs several inverter and non-inverter lines), so read the exact code and match it against Haier's own list for your unit — Haier Middle East is the right place for the model manual — rather than a generic online table where the same code disagrees between sources.
What usually needs a technician: a communication code between the indoor and outdoor units (interconnect wiring or a PCB), any compressor / pressure code, or a sensor fault — those involve refrigerant, mains wiring or the board.
Safe for the tenant first (the mild ones — often a drain or sensor nuisance code): clean the filters, check the outdoor unit isn't blocked or sitting in recirculated hot air, and power-cycle at the isolator for a few minutes.
